Gunarsa is now the Napoleon of modern Balinese art and museum—building; his wife a noble and ever-youthful Josephine. Over the past decade, Nyoman has survived a stroke, slander by Idanna Pucci in her new book and, the adoration of Claire Wolfowitz (the art-loving wife of super-hawk Paul). He has emerged as Bali’s most prominent artist. His museum, near his ancestral house on the outskirts of Klungkung, now occupies a huge 5 hectares with a three-storey museum full of classical Balinese art. There are expansive gardens, pavilions and ceremonial gates.

Tonight I arrive in the main reception area, which is bedecked like Barbara Streisand’s wedding was (if it had been sponsored by Indomie). He deserves a medal (which is duly forthcoming when the Minister of Culture announces the award of Indonesia’s most prestigious cultural gong during his introductory speech).
A single pin spot is playing on Gunarsa who sits, like Nero, in the front row. The islands are under administration of the Klungkung district. A common way to travel here is by public boat from Sanur to Lembongan. You can also sail from Padangbai directly to Nusa Penida, which will bring you to Sampalan on the north coast. There are also regular cruiseboats leaving from for example Nusa Dua.
Nusa Penida is a relatively poor district, the lack of fresh water makes growing of rice impossible, and the layer of soil is quite thin. The southern tip of the largest island is dominated by high cliffs and a flat, dry plateau at the top. It was a long time ago used as a prison for convicts by the Gelgel dynasty (see Klungkung).

Like Bali most of the population are Hindus, but the culture is quite different with local variations of dance and music, architecture and crafts. The language is an old form of Balinese not used anywhere else. According to a legend Nusa Penida is home to a mythical and infamous figure, Jero Gede Macaling, who frequently sends his invisible helpers to the southeast part of Bali to spread drought, famine, rats and pestilence.

Macaling is only spoken of with a low voice, and then often mentioned with the honorable title Beliau. In return for certain rituals Macaling is believed to protect the people. Pura Dalem Penataran Ped is one of the few temples dedicated to this figure.

The most developed island for tourism is Nusa Lembongan, the facilities here are not luxurious but of good standard. Many travel here just to relax, and it is possible to find totally deserted beaches, at least in the low season. Most of the visitors stay on the northwest coast of the island, which is a good place for surfing, swimming and diving. You can easily walk around the island, and also cross a small bridge to the neighboring Nusa Ceningan. There is not so much to see on Nusa Ceningan except for the nice view.

The largest island, Nusa Penida, has few tourist facilities, but you will find simple accommodation there. The two most important villages are Sampalan and Toyapakeh. From Toyapakeh there is a boat leaving to and from Nusa Lembongan. You can travel around the island with a bemo or a motorbike, but the roads are quite rough. The scenery can be very interesting, in the highland you will have a beautiful view of Bali. There are some good diving spots here, but you are advised to bring a local guide for security. Diving trips are also arranged from Bali.

Kamasan

Kamasan is a Balinese village located in the regency of Klungkung that is renowned for the diversity of arts and crafts produced there. Skilled artisans’ turn out goods made from bamboo, wood, iron and even discarded bullet shells left over from the Japanese occupation of the island during WW II.
The level of talent and creativity in this particular village is quite remarkable and it is estimated that at least 80 percent of the community makes a living from the handicraft industry. However, Kamasan is not solely dependant on tourism as a large portion of the goods made are for the local Balinese as religious paraphernalia for temple ceremonies and Hindu rituals.

The most important cultural craft to develop in this village is the classic puppet painting style, which is also called Kamasan. This form of art was allegedly established hundreds of years ago, long before the production of crafts became a primary source of income. As far back as the 16th century, the kingdom of Klungkung was highly appreciative of local arts and the community went to great lengths to preserve certain traditions. It was during this period that wood became a popular medium for classic puppet paintings.

When Western artists began arriving in Bali during the 1920’s due to a successful tourism promotion campaign by the Dutch colonialists, the Kamasan art style was also noticed. Foreign painters Rudolph Bonnet and his colleague Walter Spies first introduced modern fine art to Bali. Together with a Prince from Ubud, the pair also established the Pita Maha group that gave Balinese art a new direction. These two artists also played a significant role to further develop the artistic painting style of classical puppets.

It was suggested to the artists of Kamasan village to create different handicrafts and ornaments that would showcase their works. A collection of decorative jewellery boxes, fans and other trinkets were produced and displayed abroad during the 1950’s. Those first innovative pieces were warmly received by European audiences, which enabled the craft of hand-painted puppet figures upon souvenir tokens to continue until present date.

One of the specialties of Kamasan art is the naturally sourced pigments used for the paints. A black outline is first drawn in Chinese ink and then gradually filled in with several primary colours. Shades of blue are achieved with a blend of indigo leaves, yellow is from ochre oxide, brown and orange from iron oxide, while white is derived from pieces of bone, horn and calcium from ashes.

Kamasan artworks are dominated the epic Hindu tale of Mahabharata, which is a complex saga with messages of morality and ethics. The story tells of the conflict of five brothers and their struggle to maintain their reign over an ancient Hindu kingdom. One of the finest examples of this unique art form can be seen on the elevated ceiling of Bale Kerta Gosa or the Hall of Justice that is located in the quaint town of Klungkung in East Bali.

Gelgel

The old court center of Gelgel is situated 5 km south of Klungkung town and actually comprises a number of distinct villages, notably Tojan and Kamasan. The entire area is filled with ancient and legendary sites from Bali's "Golden Age" - the 16th and 17th centuries - and this is the area to which all Balinese nobility and just about everyone else on the island trace their ancestry. The most important site lies at the very heart of Gelgel - the sacred Pura Jero Agung or "Great Palace Temple," which stands on the site of the former Gelgel palace. The temple is the ancestral shrine of the old palace, which was abandoned in the 17th century following a rebellion. Adjacent to it is the Pura Jero Kapal, all that remains of the second largest palace in Gelgel that of the Lord of Kapal.

To the east of the Pura Jero Agung is ancient temple, the Pura Dasar or "base temple." This is the lowland counterpart Besakih, providing a direct connection with the sacred "mother temple" up on Mt Agung.

The festivals held at Pura Dasar are spectacular, as all members of the royal family join in. It is here that the deified ancestor are worshipped - inside are a number stones set on a stone throne, archaic symbols of ancestral worship. Nearby is the Gelgel Mosque, the oldest on Bali, which was set up to serve the spiritual needs of Muslims came from Java to serve the king in ancient times. Further to the east of Gelgel is a large complex of graveyards and temples, which are cited in the genealogies of many families from all over Bali. Just north of this is a set of two unusual shrines, the Pura Dalem Gandamayu, which was the dwelling of Pedanda Nirartha - Bali's greatest priest and the ancestor of all Siwa brahmans on the island. He established this as a branch of the legendary graveyard of the same name on Java. One of the shrines at Gandamayu is dedicated to the descendants of Nirartha, while the other belongs to the pande or black smith clan. The present temple of Gandamayu was restored in the 1970s after being partially destroyed by the 1963 eruption of Mt Agung, which devastated the whole area. The Paksabali is famous for its Dewa Mapalu or Pasraman Dewa festival - the dramatic "clashing" or "meeting of the gods." This is held during the annual Kuningan festival, when idols are borne from the temple aboard palanquins down a steep ravine to the Unda River to be ritually bathed and given offerings. As the palanquin bearers proceed back up to the temple gates, they are possessed by the gods they are carrying and race madly in circles, colliding against each other in an effort to get back into the temple compound.

The nearby village of Sampalan is the home of Bali's foremost traditional architect, Mangku Putu Cedet, who is a builder of fabulous cremation towers and traditional houses. He has traveled all over the world exhibiting his skills, and is thoroughly steeped in the arts of healing and white magic as well. When the royal family of Klungkung holds major ceremonies, it is he who is asked to perform a ritual to prevent it from raining.

An important village further to the east is Dawan, home of one of Bali's most famous high priests, Pedanda Gede Keniten. He is directly descended from the court priest of Gelgel and is in great demand for major rituals. North of Dawan is the village of Besang, famous for its main temple which has an ancient inscription under a giant pagoda. Other than inhabitants of Klungkung itself, they are also from Gianyar, Bangli, Karangasem and other regencies. Even, small-scale rituals like self-purification and three-month ritual for the baby can be found on this beach at particular time.

The most frequent ritual activities held at Watu Klotok Beach is called melis or mekiis. Such ritual is commonly carried out by the celebration of Nyepi holiday or on the occasion of Dewa Yadnya ritual (homage to Gods and elementals). In the meantime, on the Galungan holiday, thousands of devotees congregate to pay homage at Watu Klotok Temple. Uniquely, prior to entering the innermost courtyard of the temple, Hindu devotees worship in advance at Segara Temple near the beach. On the following day, this beach is filled up again by thousands of visitors. They are from villages nearby for recreation.

Watu Klotok Temple is situated in the territory of Celepik Hamlet, Tojan Village, Klungkung sub district/Regency. It is only 5 km from Semarapura or 25 minutes drive by motorbike or car south of the city. Semarapura city is 40 km from Denpasar.
On the way to Watu Klotok, visitors or devotees will see stretching green rice fields before catching a glimpse of the blue expanse of the Indian Ocean. The temple sits quietly on the beachside of Watu Klotok. The phrase watu klotok consists of word watu meaning stone and klotok meaning sound. So, watu klotok then means shaking (sounding) stone.

According to palm-leaf manuscript Dewa Purana Bangsul, this temple was established by the King Kertha to appeal for fecundity and safety in the rice field (Balinese: nangluk merana). For that purpose, every year, on Purnamaning Kelima (this year, 16 November) is held Pengusaban ceremony.

In the meantime, the palm-leaf Raja Purana Besakih spells out that Watu Klotok is the selected place for Genah Pesucian (purificatory place) of Ida Bhatara Besakih. When Besakih Temple founded circa VIII century, at the time of burying the Panca Datu, Rishi Markandya saw a shaft of light coming from the beach. Later, it was also found a shining and shaking stone and then venerated by devotees that happened to cultivate the land in rice field. Thenceforth, when they appealed for fecundity for their field and protection against plant diseases, they would perform a ritual at the temple. To have a closer look at this ritual, visitors can come on the forthcoming Wednesday, 16 November.

Kerta Gosa

Welcome to Kerta Gosa at Klungkung Semarapura Bali which is one of the famous tourism destinations in Bali and many visited by tourist everyday. Thousands of noisy bats fill the air in and around the cave, with a sharp smell of bat droppings covering the ground in a thick layer. It is also said that pythons live inside the cave, feeding on the bats. The entrance to the sacred cave is at the foot of a hill. According to legends it continue all the way to the base of Gunung Agung via an underwater river, and surfaces inside the Pura Goa temple (the cave temple) within the Besakih temple complex, about 25 km away.

A legend describe how a prince of Mengwi once entered the cave and came out in Besakih, but later nobody has tried to repeat this journey.

Today it is not allowed to enter the cave, which may be fortunate. This is also home of Naga Basuki, the mythical and sacred dragon of the Agung mountain, caretaker of the earth's equilibrium. He is honored with offerings in the temple outside the entrance.

A Shiva temple guards the entrance, with several shrines covered in bat droppings. Pura Goa Lawah is like Goa Gajah one of the oldest attractions on Bali, probably dating all the way back to 1007 AD, founded by the holy man Empu Kuturan. A meeting should have taken place here in 1904 where the princes of Bali made a plan to stop the Dutch invasion.

Pura Goa Lawah is one of the most important state temples on the island. The temple buildings in front of the cave is new, similar to other newer temples on Bali.

The site has undoubtedly become a tourist trap, with many souvenir stalls and very persistent hawkers. When you have fought your way through this you will see an interesting place, but probably not be able to hang around for long because of the smelly and noisy bats. After the visit can have a relaxing walk on the beach just opposite the main road, with an excellent view towards Nusa Penida.

Goa Lawah is located along the main road on the south east coast of Bali, about 9 km east of Semarapura (Klungkung). This is an interesting road along the coast where you can enjoy hills, forests and rice fields.
